Dr. William J. (Bill) Bigham

William J. (Bill) Bigham, M.D., a member of our staff since 2002, has enjoyed a professional relationship with our physicians since the mid 1980's.

A board certified ophthalmologist and career Navy physician before joining our practice, Dr. Bigham completed his Ophthalmology Residency at Naval Medical Center, San Diego (Balboa) in 1988. Following fellowship training in Oculoplastic surgery at the world renowned Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, he became the Director of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Balboa. There he was active in teaching, research and direct patient care. Dr. Bigham also served as the Surgeon General’s Specialty Leader for Ophthalmology for many years, playing an important role in bringing laser refractive surgery to the Navy and other military services. Other roles included Chairman, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Director of Clinical Services for the hospital ship, USNS MERCY, TAH-19.

Dr. Bigham was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Growing up in northern Virginia and Long Island, New York, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with distinction in 1976. Receiving his commission in the Navy at graduation and having earned a full scholarship to graduate school, he attended the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine. He completed his internship in surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Prior to ophthalmology residency, Dr. Bigham soloed in the T-34C, earned his flight surgeon wings and served with the First Marine Aircraft Wing in Iwakuni, Japan and squadrons at NAS North Island. A second tour overseas came years later with an assignment as the Surgeon for the U.S. Seventh Fleet aboard U.S.S. Blue Ridge, LCC-19, home ported in Yokosuka, Japan.

Dr. Bigham is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Avid Padre and Charger fans, the Bighams reside in Coronado, with their four children.
